See below for one man’s humble opinion (by way of a Chardonnay Review) of this offering from Harry & David.
Chardonnay Review Highlights
- Mouthfeel is decent – full like a good oaked Chardonnay can do.
- There’s too much oak and malolactic fermentation! It’s buttery, but there’s nothing else to support it so it stands alone, kind of like Keifer Sutherland when he thought he was marrying Julia Roberts.
- Besides the mouthfeel, the rest of the wine is uninspiring (kind of like this Chardonnay review), which is what you can get with a Chardonnay, in my humble opinion.
Chardonnay Review Details
Overall, it’s hard to say too much bad about this offering from Oregon from Harry & David Vineyards, considering I didn’t pay for it, and it just showed up to my door stuffed in a box with plenty of wonderful tasty fruit. However, I will say plenty bad, because I’m a miserable person (smiles warmly as if it matters).
There are VERY light lemon notes to this wine. Medium to high acidity, and medium alcohol for a Chardonnay. And there is the butter….so, if you like a buttery Chardonnay (by the way, I listened recently to a podcast for WineForNormalPeople where it was determined you should always capitalize place names, but not grapes such as cabernet sauvignon – so interesting – not really!), this could be something you enjoy. I didn’t hate it…it’s very drinkable and very unoffensive – kind of like that person who shows up to all the parties and nobody remembers his/her name. They are always there, and yet nobody ever seems to remember this person to no fault of their own.
I keep taking more sips, trying to uncover something else. However, it’s not really there. BUT, and I say this with utmost respect, it’s not horrible by any means. I’d totally serve this to people that don’t understand wine in any way. They’d probably enjoy it, as it’s very clean and there is good body. It’s a Chardonnay for the common people…and I’m a common person! Another sip….and still nothing more, but I’m pleasantly enjoying this.
The Chardonnay Acquisition Backstory
Normally, I’d like to talk about price and how I came to acquire this wine. Usually, I’d like to tell a story, perhaps of intrigue, perhaps of humor, in which I give everyone a glimpse into the back story of this wine, and perhaps a backstory of myself, as humiliating as it may be.
However, in this case, for this Chardonnay Review, I don’t know how much it cost, as it came as a package deal. It arrived in 2020 as part of a fresh fruit pack, destined for my place due to my ex-wife, who received the wonderful fresh fruit package from…..hmmm, I’m not sure I remember. However, I did put the wine into my white wine refrigerator, with the perfectly harmonious intention to give this bottle to her. Time passed, and then, out of nowhere, it seemed appropriate for me to open it. So, I did….and it (the wine), was ok. It was nothing to write home about, nor tell my ex-wife how splendid it was. But it was OK. And sometimes, OK is better than OK!
Food Pairings for the Harry & David 2019 Chardonnay?
Well, there’s not that much going on here besides the buttery and light citrus notes. Therefore, I don’t think it would be too horrible with anything. Fish with some substance and shellfish would pair pretty well due to the strong body of this Chardonnay, and there’s enough oak to stand up to smoked chicken and pork.
Enjoy!
