What’s going on, fellow wine drinkers!?!?!? I’ve been holding off on this review of Kirkland Signature 2021 Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon for some time. Why, you ask? Well, to be completely honest, part of me wanted to keep this treasure to myself for some time. I’ve been enjoying this offering for a couple of years now. More details to follow!
Cabernet Sauvignon Review Highlights
- Great quality for the price at less than $10 per bottle!
- Shows what you’d expect from an Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon – a dry wine with pleasant acidity and tannin, with just the right amount of fruit.
- Black fruits are most prominent, with black and green pepper with chocolate notes rounding out the well-balanced flavor.
The Details
OK – spoiler alert – this wine is very inexpensive. And thus, it’s great quality for the price. There’s not many wines that I would say are drinkable in this price range. However, there are a few from our friends at Costco that fit the bill. This is one of them. In fact, this is my go to recommendation for people looking for a decent bottle of approachable red wine that doesn’t care to break the bank. It sits right next to my favorite bargain white wine offering from Costco, the Kirkland Signature Ti Point sauvignon blanc. This cabernet sauvignon, at a hair under $10, will not disappoint a single discerning yet frugal wine drinker. Therefore, this review will be very complementary of this cabernet sauvignon.
In the glass, this Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon is a beautiful opaque purple. When tilted, you can see just a hint of redness at the surface, exactly as you’d expect from a Sonoma cabernet. On the nose, while still a little tight, after a good swirl the blackberry, black plum, and currant show through. Hints of black and green pepper mix with a little bit of chocolate to round out a very pleasant nose.
The initial sip presents itself with the aforementioned fruits, along with a very pleasant astringency. The mouth feel is full, covering your tongue with just the right amount of fruit. As the wine slides down your throat, you can feel the supple tannin, leaving a slight dryness. The finish lingers for a few moments, allowing you to enjoy the wine after it’s out of your mouth. Yes, this cabernet sauvignon is well done, especially for the price, and therefore deserves a very favorable review.
The Cabernet Sauvignon Acquisition Backstory
Not too much of a story to tell here – outside of the fact that it costs less than a number of fine things in 2024:
- Less than the average cost to go to see a movie in a theater in the United States (~$10.53).
- Less than the toll fees to cross New York City’s George Washington Bridge during peak hours (~$10 for cash payments).
- Less than the cost to rent a new release blockbuster in 4K on Amazon Prime (~$10).
- Less than the ATM Fees in popular casinos in Las Vegas ($10).
- Less than the cost of a McDonald’s Value (!!!) meal in Union Square in San Francisco (~11).
So, get in your car and get over to Costco and find this wine! If you don’t have a membership, get one! Or hang out outside of a local Costco until you see someone you know and beg them to take them in with you!
Food Pairings
This wine does perfectly fine on it’s own – no need to drink it with food, especially at this price. However, this will go well with anything that you might serve a California cabernet sauvignon. The following could all marry perfectly with this wine:
- Burgers – Try a Gorgonzola Slathered Burger! You won’t be disappointed!
- Steaks – Any steak will be wonderful next to this. If you want to go big, try a Bacon-wrapped Garlic Parmesan Tenderloin! However, any steak would be wonderful with this.
- Beef Stroganoff – I love this recipe – super easy as done by Natasha’s Kitchen.
- Aged and Hard Cheeses
- Hearty Soups and Stews
